Retina

Your eye is the only place in the body where we can non-invasively see the blood vessels and blood flow in your body. It gives us information on the health of the blood vessels in the rest of your body, including your heart and your brain. Almost all of the general medical conditions or any medication you take by mouth may involve your eyes, retina, macula or cornea.

We provide the most thorough and advanced retina and macula evaluation and treatment using careful examination techniques, latest technology and expertise in this field. Our slit lamp biomicroscopy, binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy, Cirrus HD-OCT (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, Calif.) and Canon Fundus Camera detects early macular and retinal disease, evaluates blood flow in the vessels, any age related macular degeneration changes, changes related to high blood pressure or increased cholesterol or early side effects from medications by measuring macular individual and deviation thickness and pattern map.

Dr. Ganelis is an expert in the field of retinal diseases. She published her works in the peer reviewed journals and made multiple presentations to her colleagues during scientific meetings and grand rounds.

The following is a short list of conditions we can diagnose by dilated eye exam:

  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Hypertensive retinopathy
  • Age related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Effects of medications on retina and macula
  • Detached or torn retina
  • Macular edema
  • Macular hole
  • Ocular / retinal migraine
  • Uveal melanoma
  • Uveal nevus (freckle)
  • Inflammatory eye diseases
  • Infectious eye diseases
  • Retinitis pigmentosa
  • Hereditary retinal disorders

Depending on the finding, Dr. Ganelis will be able to make individualized recommendations such as taking certain vitamins and nutritional supplements, having certain type of UV light protection, certain changes to your medications, necessary adjustments in your lifestyle, etc.

Dr. Ganelis will also provide the continuity of care with your primary care doctor, internal medicine specialist, cardiologist, neurologist, rheumatologist, endocrinologist or nephrologist because systemic diseases can first make a presentation in the eye.
